Safety regulations

Strict rules still apply at airports with regards to the transport of liquids, aerosols and gels in hand baggage. Passengers are prohibited from bringing into dedicated security areas, as well as on board aircraft fire arms and their replicas, incapacitating instruments, explosive and flammable substances, sharp objects, trademan’s tools and blunt objects, which have the potential to cause considerable injury.

The prohibited items list is for information purposes only. Security control personnel have the right to refuse to let some objects, which might raise rightful suspicion about their possible misuse and endangering the safety of a civil flight on board flight.

Liquids

Passengers may carry liquid, paste or gel based materials in their hand baggage:

  • in individual containers that hold no more than 100 ml,
  • they must be placed in a transparent and re-sealable plastic bag (together with aerosols and gels), which must not exceed the volume of 1 litre, ensuring all contents fit into the plastic bag comfortably and the bag is completely sealed.

All liquids must be taken out of hand baggage and declared individually by being placed in a tray together with baggage before passing through security control.

Liquids include:
  • Shampoos, shower gels,
  • Perfumes,
  • Non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages,
  • Other materials of liquid nature.

! With liquids, it is not the actual volume of the liquid in the container, but rather the volume stated on the container that will be considered.

Pastes and gels

Passengers may carry paste and gel based materials in their hand baggage:

  • The maximum volume of one container is 100 ml,
  • They must be placed in a transparent and re-sealable plastic bag (together with liquids and aerosols), which must not exceed the volume of 1 litre, ensuring all contents fit into the plastic bag comfortably and the bag is completely sealed.

All gels must be taken out of hand baggage and declared individually by being placed in a tray together with baggage before passing through security control.

Gels include:
  • Toothpastes,
  • Hair gels,
  • Other materials of paste or gel nature, or of similar consistency.

! With regard to pastes and gels it is not the actual volume of liquid in the container, but rather the volume stated on the container that will be considered.

Sprays (aerosols)

Passengers may carry aerosols in their hand baggage, provided they are not flammable (the container must not include a fire pictogram), if:

  • The maximum volume of one container is 100 ml.
  • They are placed in a transparent and re-sealable plastic bag (together with liquids and gels), which must not exceed the volume of 1 litre, ensuring all contents fit into the plastic bag comfortably and the bag is completely sealed.

All aerosols must be taken out of hand baggage and declared individually by being placed in a tray together with baggage before passing through security control.

Aerosols include:
  • Hairsprays,
  • Underarm sprays and others.

! With regard to aerosols, it is not the actual volume in the container, but rather the volume stated on the container that will be considered. Volume regulations do not apply in the case of checked baggage, which the passenger drops off at the check-in counter.

Sharp objects

Hand baggage allows only pocket-knives (without corkscrew), scissors and screwdrivers, provided the length of the sharp or pointed blade is not longer than 6 cm.

Other prohibited items are:

  • Ceremonial (ritualistic, collector and religious) knives,
  • Loose and cut-throat razors (excluding disposable shaving razors with blades encased in a cartridge),
  • Ice skates,
  • Tradesman's tools that have the potential to be used as a pointed or edged weapon, e.g. drills of all kinds, hammers, pliers, wrenches/spanners, blow torches and others.




Medication

Passengers may carry in their hand baggage commonly available medication in packaging of up to 100 ml or in solid form

  • Non-prescription medication,
  • placed in a transparent and re-sealable plastic bag (together with other liquids, aerosols and gels), which must not exceed the volume of 1 litre, ensuring all contents fit in the plastic bag comfortably and the bag is completely sealed.

Medication includes: headache tablets, nose sprays/eye drops, cough syrups, and others.

In the case of insulin pens or other liquid medication, the packaging of which exceeds 100 ml:

  • it is necessary to carry a letter of confirmation from one’s doctor,
  • the medication must be placed in a transparent and re-sealable plastic bag and declared at security control,
  • it is advised the confirmation letter from the doctor is in Slovak, as well as in the English language. The doctor’s confirmation does not need to be officially verified.
You can only carry the necessary medication in your hand baggage to a volume essential for the length of your travels.

Food and baby food

Bryndza cheese, curds, fish mayonnaise salad and other similar food stuffs are only permitted to be carried in hand baggage in a prescribed manner:

  • In an individual container within the maximum permitted volume, i.e. 100 ml/g per item, ,
  • placed in a transparent and re-sealable plastic bag and declared at security control.

Transporting baby food during flights in hand baggage is subject to special regulations. Baby food and other liquids may be carried also in a volume above the permitted 100 ml per packaging.

If requested, a passenger is obliged to confirm the safety of the carried liquids. The accompanying adult or parent is obliged to taste or test the specified food, if requested by the security control personnel to do so.

Firearms

Passengers are prohibited from bringing the following into the dedicated security areas and on board the aircraft:

  • Any firearms or other objects capable of discharging a projectile,
  • Replicas and imitations of firearms,
  • Ammunition and military explosives,
  • Toy weapons of all types, crossbows, catapults,
  • Weapons firing sharp objects, lighters shaped like a firearm, and others.

Sporting equipment

It is prohibited to bring the following on board and to dedicated security areas:

  • Any blunt instruments capable of causing injury

These include:

  • Baseball bats,
  • Golf clubs,
  • Hockey sticks,
  • Billiard, snooker or pool cues,
  • Fishing rods,
  • Skateboards,
  • Any tent equipment (e.g. tent pegs, collapsible tent poles, etc.) and others.

Explosives and flammable substances

Passengers are prohibited from bringing the following into dedicated security areas and on board the aircraft:

  • Fireworks,
  • Flares in any form,
  • Other pyrotechnics, including fun and toy pyrotechnics,
  • Flammable liquid fuel, e.g. petrol, diesel, lighter liquid, alcohol (above 70%), ethanol, detonators and fuses, gas and gas containers, such as butane, propane, acetylene, oxygen.
